From 2002, as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit, until his senior status as Bishop of Lansing, Bishop Boyea prepared homilies each year for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. These diverse homilies have included the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, and some titles or attributes of the Holy Spirit. In each case, these have been linked up to a personality in the Scriptures who seems to manifest that quality associated with the Holy Spirit.

Temples of the Holy Spirit

Part I: The Effects of the Holy Spirit

The next seven homilies deal with some aspect of the Spirit’s work in our lives and how we are to use this grace to advance the work of the Gospel.

Part II: Gifts of the Holy Spirit

What follows now are presentations on the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which has been an important part of Catholic teaching about the workings of the Holy Spirit. This is based on Isaiah 11:2, where “fear of the Lord” is listed twice and the Church has listed “piety” in the first instance.

Part III: The Fruits of the Holy Spirit

In Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, chapter five, the Apostle first lists some 15 vices or fruits of the flesh. Then, he lists nine virtues or fruits of the Spirit as he encourages us to live according to the Spirit.
